Fresh Pasta Arrives in Hainan: A Culinary Collaboration Between China and Italy in the Free Trade Port
In early 2025, a shipment of durum wheat pasta produced in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region arrived by sea at Hainan's Yangpu International Container Terminal. This marked Hainan Free Trade Port's first large-scale import of traditional European pasta, signifying another step forward in Hainan's vision to become a “global hub for food ingredients.”
Imported by a Hainan-based supply chain management company, the pasta entered Hainan at prices lower than mainland markets by leveraging the Free Trade Port's “zero-tariff” list and value-added processing policies. Upon arrival, Haikou Customs established a “green channel,” implementing “direct pickup at the ship's side” and “immediate inspection upon arrival.” Seamless cold chain logistics ensured the products reached duty-free warehouses and high-end supermarkets within 48 hours.
The imported pasta not only expands Hainan's duty-free food offerings but also caters to the island's thriving catering industry. The products were swiftly procured by multiple star-rated hotels and Italian restaurants, becoming key ingredients in fusion menus blending Chinese and Western flavors. Simultaneously, some pasta entered duty-free stores, attracting tourists to “buy and take away immediately,” offering them a taste of Europe.
The success of this transaction validates Hainan's potential as an international fresh produce transit hub. Moving forward, Hainan is poised to become the “preferred gateway” for premium European food products entering the Chinese market, continuing to write the story of a free trade port that “buys globally and sells globally.”
